Academic writing is an area of concern for students who have had limited experience with advanced levels of writing. This course aims at helping students improve their academic writing skills and get acquainted with features of the research article in their fields of study. A focus is given to the formal aspects of writing as related to the academic genre. Writing is seen as a continuous process of exploration, practice and reflection.

This course aims at helping students improve their academic writing skills and get acquainted with features of the research article in their fields of study
In order to take this course, it is required for students to have an upper intermediate level of proficiency in English. Students need to have this level of proficiency because this is not an advanced grammar course but a course intended to prepare students to push their writing to a level in which they can produce academic texts. This level of proficiency can be demonstrated through any international proficiency test recently taken or by taking the test in the office of the program.

Temario
OBJETIVO GENERAL
-To introduce basic protocols to write and submit academic papers and in particular the different components of the research articles according to the guidelines of the American Psychological Association of America (APA), a widely used format to standardize diverse thinking processes through writing.
OBJETIVOS ESPECÍFICOS
- To define plagiarism, identify how, why, when, and what if one falls into it, and learn how to avoid it.
- To become acquainted with the APA system of documentation of sources.
- To follow a process of systematic steps in order to prepare for the writing, write the assignment and reflect on it.
- To write coherently and use grammar and mechanics correctly.
- To differentiate quite well in practice one’s own responsibilities as a writer from those of one’s readers.
- To identify the rhetorical moves in the different components of a research article
- To acknowledge mistakes as the best raw material to improve one’s writing.
